Research stay at the Università degli Studi di Perugia (Italy)

Between September and December 2026, Dr. Fernando Peña, a researcher in the EPMAN Research Group, is undertaking a research stay at the Smart Manufacturing Laboratory of the Università degli Studi di Perugia (Italy). This research mobility is funded by the 2024 José Castillejo Grants for Mobility Stays Abroad for Young PhD Holders (reference CAS24/00272), as part of the project entitled “Development of Machine Learning Techniques for In-Process Multisensor Monitoring and Optimization of Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (MEX)”.

The research activities focus on the development of novel monitoring methods for the Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (MEX) process. To this end, data collected from an intelligent MEX 3D printer equipped with a network of advanced sensors are being analyzed and modeled.

By applying Deep Learning techniques, the main objective is to develop an automated system capable of detecting in-process anomalies in real time. This technological approach aims to reduce reliance on post-process quality assessment and, consequently, to achieve significant improvements in production efficiency, as well as reductions in quality-control time and costs.
