Short CV:
David Blanco earned a BSc in Industrial Engineering (1999) and a PhD (2007). Since 2022, he has been working as a Senior Lecturer in the area of Manufacturing Processes Engineering at the University of Oviedo. Since 2012, he has also served as the Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Mechatronic Engineering at the same institution. As a researcher, he has contributed to five projects under the National R&D Plan and served as Principal Investigator for 25 industry projects, generating over €750,000 in funding in the past decade. He has co-authored more than 40 publications, including 11 indexed scientific articles—five of which were published in first-tier JCR journals—and six chapters in technical books. He has presented 21 papers at prestigious conferences, such as the World Congress on Engineering (WCE) and ETFA-IEEE, receiving the Best Paper Award at the WCE twice. Additionally, he has supervised two PhD thesis and more than 20 BSc and MSc theses, while collaborating on four teaching innovation projects.

Abstract The processes utilized for Additive Manufacturing (AM) production of metallic parts usually entail the use of hazardous feedstocks, expensive production equipment, and high energy consumption. Metal Material Extrusion AM (MEX/M) presents an alternative multi-step approach that addresses these challenges by additively extruding polymer-metal composite [...]
Publications
Abstract: The industrial adoption of material extrusion of polymers (MEX/P) is hindered by the geometric quality of manufactured parts. Contact image sensors (CISs), commonly used in flatbed scanners, have been proposed as a suitable technology for layer-wise characterization of contour deviations, paving the way for [...]
Publications
Abstract Material Extrusion (MEX) currently stands as the most widespread Additive Manufacturing (AM) process, but part quality deficiencies remain a barrier to its generalized industrial adoption. Quality control in MEX is a complex task as extrusion performance impacts the consistency of mechanical properties and the [...]
PhD,Theses
Abstract Additive manufacturing has undergone a rapid development in recent decades, evolving from prototyping and individual part fabrication to fabrication of functional components and serial production. The progressive reduction of the cost per unit has transformed additive manufacturing into a viable alternative to conventional processes [...]
Projects,Public Funding Projects
Abstract: Additive manufacturing processes are opening up a world of possibilities towards obtaining parts with complex geometry and adjustable properties. Its impact in sectors such as biomechanics, energy or aerospace is already appreciable, but the forecasts point to a real revolution linked to the development [...]

Abstract: The current productivity requirements to facilitate the rapid delivery of high-quality products to market in which the accuracy achieved in the manufacturing plays a prominent role, have promoted significant advances in the machining and inspection phases on CNC machines. On Machine Measuring techniques (OMM) [...]
Projects,Public Funding Projects
Abstract: The current requirement of precision on freeform surface machining, as well as productivity necessities which facilitate the supply of high-quality products to the market, have promoted an important progress on integration of machining and inspection stages on machining centres. On Machine Measuring techniques (OMM) [...]
