Research on Stereolithography Additive Manufacturing Technology for Optimized Ceramic Tooling for Difficult-to-Machine Alloys (FASLATOOL)
Abstract
The project explores the possibility of using additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramic materials to produce ceramic tools for metal cutting. Among other advantages, this concept aims to manufacture ceramic tools with optimized cutting geometries, provide them with customized texturing of the cutting surface, generate optimized internal cooling channels at no additional cost, and ultimately manufacture customized tools in short production runs without additional cost. The project is still active (in its first year), but the group submitting this proposal, comprising researchers from UniLeon (TAFI) and Uniovi (EPMan), has already carried out preliminary tests using SLA technology to produce textured surfaces with different geometries and levels of detail. The results confirm the feasibility of texturing tool surfaces (ceramic inserts) during the manufacturing stage itself (SLA), thereby eliminating the need for additional post-processing operations and enabling their use for cutting metallic materials.
