Characterisation of the performance of a structural light digitizing sensor by using different materials and surface finishes

Abstract

This study aims to characterise the metrological performance of the EinScan-SP structured-light scanner (Shining 3D) when digitising calibrated spheres made from different materials, including tungsten carbide (WC), aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) and zirconium oxide (ZrO₂), with a range of surface finishes, including shot-blasted, polished and coated surfaces. Performance is assessed using several indicators: the number of points acquired, point-cloud quality, and dimensional and geometrical deviations relative to measurements obtained using a high-performance contact coordinate measuring system. In addition to evaluating the raw point clouds, the influence of filtering on the resulting data is investigated.

The results provide practical recommendations on the selection of sphere materials and surface finishes, as well as on the application of filtering, where appropriate, to support the metrological assessment of this type of scanning system.
