Comparative analysis of Fused Deposition Modelling (MEX-TRB) printed parts using Al2O3 versus PLA

Abstract

This study compares the accuracy and resolution of parts fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) using 100 vol% polylactic acid (PLA) filaments and ceramic filaments containing 45 vol% Al₂O₃ and 55 vol% polyolefin binder.

Test artifacts were manufactured and evaluated according to ISO 52902:2023. Dimensional accuracy was assessed along the X, Y, and Z axes, while resolution was evaluated using features including pins, holes, ribs, and slots. Optimized printing parameters were applied to ceramic specimens, which subsequently underwent debinding and sintering. These post-processing stages can introduce defects such as cracks, breakage, and deformation.

The results revealed average dimensional deviations below 0.062 mm for PLA parts, compared with deviations exceeding 0.178 mm for ceramic parts along the X-axis. Printing failures associated with extrusion-head retraction and warping during post-processing were also observed. These findings highlight the challenges of achieving dimensional accuracy and process reliability in ceramic FDM, particularly due to the additional post-processing requirements.
