Conoscopic Holography feasibility for form error in-situ monitoring in Additive Manufacturing

Abstract

The lack of standardisation and persistent part-quality issues in additive manufacturing have highlighted the need for in-situ monitoring techniques based on different types of sensors. Each sensing technology offers specific advantages and limitations depending on the characteristics of the features to be analysed.

This study investigates the feasibility of conoscopic holography (CH) for in-situ monitoring of form errors arising during the layer-by-layer fabrication process. The measurements obtained using the CH sensor are compared with those from a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), used as a reference. The metrological performance of the CH sensor is also compared with that of a contact image sensor (CIS). The results demonstrate that CH offers greater suitability and versatility for monitoring this type of error, highlighting its potential for in-situ quality assessment in additive manufacturing.
