Development of thermoplastic extrusion additive manufacturing equipment with on-machine inspection and verification capabilities
Abstract
This project involved the design, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of an additive manufacturing system with inspection capabilities. The manufacturing technology employed is fused thermoplastic filament deposition, while the inspection bridge is designed to accommodate different types of sensors. However, during the course of this project, the sensor installed on the bridge was a non-contact sensor (CIS sensor) used to digitize the deposited layers. The system design encompasses both the mechanical and electronic design, including the selection of the required components, as well as the calculations related to mechanical stresses. In addition, manufacturing and assembly drawings were prepared, and an initial commissioning process was carried out to ensure that the system was operational. The main software tools used throughout the project were SolidWorks, ANSYS, and Office 365. Additionally, the software for the control board used to operate the machine (Duet 3 6HC) was installed and configured through the manufacturer’s web application, and supporting websites were used to calculate assembly tolerances.
