Mechanical design of an automatic extrusion head changing system for a multifilament FFF 3D printer
Abstract
The aim of this project was to design an automated storage and nozzle-changing system for a multi-filament FFF 3D printer. Following an analysis of additive manufacturing technology and the main automatic tool-changing systems currently available, a solution was developed based on a modular storage unit and a coupling carriage with ball locators, enabling the nozzles to be stored, secured and changed quickly and accurately.
The designed system enables automatic nozzle changes, allowing different materials to be combined during the manufacture of a single part without operator intervention. In addition, storing the nozzles at an appropriate temperature helps to reduce start-up times after each change.
The main advantages of the proposed solution include its mechanical simplicity, as no additional actuators are required, as well as its fast and accurate nozzle-changing capability and the ease of manufacturing, assembly and replacement of its components. Overall, the proposed design provides a simple and modular solution for automating nozzle changes in multi-filament FFF systems.
