Study of the dimensional and geometrical accuracy of parts manufactured by FFF on a test bench
Abstract
In this project, cubic and cylindrical parts were manufactured using two FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) machines: a BCN3D machine and a test bench developed by IPF. The work was structured into two phases: the first focused on selecting and adjusting the manufacturing parameters through visual and metrological inspection of test specimens, while the second involved manufacturing the final parts and characterising their dimensional and geometric accuracy using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).
Although it was not possible to achieve complete standardisation of the manufacturing parameters due to difficulties encountered during the study, the parameters selected in the first phase provided representative results in the second phase, which was completed in accordance with the proposed objectives.
The results showed that the BCN3D achieved greater dimensional and geometric accuracy, with values closer to the nominal ones than those obtained with the test bench, for both cubic and cylindrical parts. In addition, a scaling error was detected in the test bench, resulting in dimensional deviations that increased with the size of the parts. Although the test bench exhibited better squareness, this characteristic was not sufficient to achieve the accuracy obtained with the BCN3D.
